| Can you send faxes from email? |
Internet fax services integrate fax and email. Most people work in email all day anyway…why switch to another application to get a fax? Beware of services that want you to download special software. These often propagate adware and spyware. |
| Can you send faxes online? |
Away from the home office? Travelling, or at your ‘real’ office. Still need to send a fax? Sending faxes online means that if you can get to the web, you can get to your faxes. |
| Can you send faxes in your required formats (DOC, JPG, TXT, etc.)? |
Most internet fax service providers support a variety of document formats to be sent as attachments. What matters most is not who supports the most file formats, but who supports the file formats that YOU require. |
| Can you set control the fax appearance? |
You should be able to put your company name on the fax banner (the part that prints at the top of each fax). This will distinguish your fax from spam, too. |
| Can you send faxes from more than one email address? |
You probably have different emails (a personal email, work email, one for your PDA…). You should be able to send faxes from all of them. |
| Can you customize a cover page? |
You can always just make your own cover page, and remember to include it whenever you fax. Better, look for a service like MyFax. It lets you upload your own cover page. |
| Are faxes retried if they fail? |
If you get a busy signal, you’d call back, right? Well, your fax service should do the same – automatically. You should look for 1 or 2 retries – more isn’t necessarily better. You should also get a confirmation of when the fax is delivered. |
| Get notified if there’s a problem |
If a fax isn’t delivered (it’s a wrong number, or the fax number is out of service) then you should be told via email. |
